Bits n Bobs

Brian Moore is home with a sprained back for those interested! Many thanks to Baggy, Big Mac, Dale, Dale Mac, George, Joe, Lauren, Lodgy, Matt, Nemo & Tam for turning up to the Cross Country today, even tho Tam & Big Mac either can't tell the time or forgot we said to meet at 10am!

Bowling this Monday 6pm, Yes Tam & Big Mac 6pm!

We start work in a fortnight on your DoE & QSA. We also need to stack our camping equipment a little more neatly, please come in clothes suitable to get dirty.

As you've managed to loose several compass' recently, in future we will not loan this equipment out but will sell it you at trade cost (£10 for compass & perry whistle). We also have some brand new Sherpa 60 rucksack available for purchase @ £45.

You will one Monday night, once you've got the map and compass basics worked out, be going out to put theory into practice. So I'll need parental consent for this outdoor (in the dark) activity. I need your parental consent forms for the Barnsley Boundary walk, and for those racing at the swimming Gala.

The leaders will be meeting soon to plan next years activity calendar, so what do YOU want to do? No good moaning that Explorers is boring if your idea is - summat gud...

Camp cancellation

Unfortunately I have received no permission to Camp forms for this weekend.
I am therefore canceling the camp as there is insufficient time to complete and submit the required paperwork.

For those doing voluntary work please look at vinspired.com and register your work for job applications.
Also whilst on the web look at scouts.org.uk/qsa for info on your queen scout award & Gold DoE.

The below is a message from Michelle aka Rainbow Dave who's a stilt walker (Yes this is stilt walkers anonymous!)

Basically he's have been doing circus skills evenings in scouts and guide groups of all ages for a few years now and teach stilt walking on big camps. He knows the basics of most skills and has enough equipment to let the young people have a go and try something new!

His kit includes
Juggling
Diablos
Devil Sticks
Spinning Plates
Poi

Also specialist equipment that he might be able to bring along
Pole stilts
Bocks (Bouncy Stilts)
Unicycle.... but I haven't mastered it yet!

He's brought some of his equipment up north while at uni

Jamboree

Were you born between 25th July 1993 and 27th July 1997?

Are you a Scout, Explorer or Young Leader in a Barnsley District?

YES to both of these questions? Then you are one of the lucky ones who are able to attend the 22nd World Scout Jamboree in 2011! A World Scout Jamboree is a gathering of Scouts from almost every country in the world, and it really will be the "experience of a lifetime" for those lucky enough to take part.

It's bigger than the Olympics, both in terms of the number of participants, and also the number of countries represented. You'll live and take part in activities alongside Scouts from all over the world, making new friends for life, and experiencing different cultures you never even knew existed.

Do you want to find out how to get selected to attend the World Scout Jamboree in 2011?

YES? Then you are invited to a Bonfire, Fireworks and Information Evening at Silverwood Scout Campsite on Sunday 8th November at 6pm. We will tell you what a World Scout Jamboree is all about and how to apply to attend District selection in Barnsley.

Xploreration 2009

Xploreration 2009

19th September 2009
The Event:
As a team of 4 -6, using public transport and your feet only, you have to visit as many places as possible from the list of 'sites of interest' we'll give you (40+ at the moment), gaining points for each site visited. The more awkward a site is to visit via public transport, the more points it is worth…
All you'll need to do is take a photo whilst you are there to prove you arrived. To prevent any cheating (surely not; you're Scouts after all!) you must buy a copy of the day's Newspaper to appear in all the photos with you.
You can start off from where ever you like in South Yorkshire: the only stipulation is that it should have internet access, as the list of destinations will be published online at 08:00 that morning.
The event will finish at the Jubilee Lodge at Hesley Wood at 18:00. Teams that arrive after this will be penalised by 1 point for every minute they are late!
How much will it cost?
That depends on you! The only thing we'll provide will be the instructions and a BBQ at Hesley when you've finished, so the basic cost is £3.00. You must also work out how much your fares will be and the cheapest way of paying for them – for some of you this may be by buying a 'South Yorkshire Day Tripper' ticket (currently £5.50, buy it from the driver or conductor), for others it may be cheaper to use your 'MegaTravel Pass' (40p for each bus or tram fare, half price on trains).
So we reckon the cost will be around £8.50 for the whole event.
Of course you could make a weekend out of it and book yourself into Hesley for Friday and/or Saturday night – pay your own camp fees (£2.70 pppn) and bring/buy your own food. There's plenty of camping space at the front of the Jubilee Lodge!
Programme
By the 22
nd August
Register your general interest with the organisers, so we know if it's worthwhile doing or not. As long as we have at least 5 teams (Explorer, Network or Leaders, from anywhere in South Yorkshire) then it's a goer! We'll email you a team-sheet.
By the 5
th September
Let us know if you're definitely going to enter a team. Email us your forms and send a cheque for £3 for each member. Cheques should be made payable to 'Don District Explorer Scouts' and sent to: Kit Levesley, 9 Bower Lane, Grenoside, Sheffield, S35 8NE.
19
th September
At 08:00 the list of destinations will be published on the web. You have until 18:00 to gain as many points as possible and reach Hesley. You will loose 1 point for each 1 minute you are late, and if you arrive after 19:00 you'll be disqualified.
After you've stuffed your faces at the BBQ there will be a presentation of prizes and a slide show of the best photos, then after that you can wind your weary way back home, or if you're camping the night then head back to your tent/party all night (quietly!) etc etc.
Equipment
 Packed Lunch including drink – or buy it en route if you wish.
 Unit Necker/Scarf – must be worn at all times and definitely worn in all photos!
 Maps to cover South Yorkshire, your route list and Points list
 Waterproof Coat
 Team Mascot
 Mobile Phone and/or digital camera. Please bring an adaptor card or USB connector just in case we don't have the right one…
 Personal First Aid Kit
 Bag to put it all in!
 If you're camping you'll need all the usual gear as well.
A few points:
 You will be using public transport, so please remember that we are members of the Scout Association and consider other public users during the day.
 Try and plan a route that will take you in a circle, so that you are not constantly criss-crossing your path.
 Are destinations that are more difficult to get to worth visiting – could you get more points by visiting more of the easier sites?
 When you arrive at the destination, take a photo of the whole group (minus the picture taker of course!).
 Don't spend the first hour buying a load of sweets!
 The only transport you can use is public or your feet – absolutely no cars or motor bikes, and definitely no Hitch Hiking!
 Don't forget safety first on crossing roads etc.
 An emergency mobile number will be supplied with the download.
 As a team you will need to be collected from Hesley Wood after the event at approx 21:00.
 Alternatively your team may wish to camp over at Hesley Wood – see the camp warden for details.
To enter download an Entry Form from the website:

FW: South Yorkshire Explorer Scouts - Email 2

Gilwell 24

I had mention of 5 Explorers who might have difficulty getting there. In Rotherham we are currently pooling interest and should have an idea next week whether it is leaders cars again or we could run to a small coach. Will keep that ESL posted.

I had interest in meeting up down there, so will keep you posted when I know what we are doing in Rotherham.

Crewboree

Who is going, any Explorers. Might it be worth putting on an activity later in the day Saturday for Explorers only, to provide opportunity to meet and mingle. Perhaps after all the activities have finished, either before campfire or immediately after. Any suggestions as to what. I was thinking perhaps a pioneering challenge, a self supporting bridge - saw it done recently, very impressed.

Action - please let me have any feedback.

DESC meeting, next Tuesday, at Hesley, if there is anything you want raising let me know.

Survival Weekend

It has been suggested by some Explorers that a Survival Weekend could be put on during the summer, July/August. I have to make some calls about this to contacts I have been given.

What interest. Obviously some, otherwise it wouldn't have been suggested.

Action - please let me have any feedback.

Monopoly

I have had a suggestion for an event in the Autumn, starting/finishing out of Hesley, with supper after, based on the Monopoly concept - thanks Kit. I will be picking up with Kit and hope we can open this up and get interest across South Yorkshire.

YL Training

Mike and I are looking at YL training and whether something could be offered out of Hesley, perhaps over a weekend, ticking off many modules. This will be discussed next week at the DESC meeting.

Action - please let me have any feedback.

Finally

What thoughts, suggestions, as to any activity that could be put on especially for Explorers in South Yorkshire, something that hasn't been done or not done for some time, whatever.

Who does go climbing? Who might like to?

FW: Camp

From: benjamin.woodcock@live.co.uk

Hi Chris,

Just wanted to point out the actual times for the camp :)

On Saturday we will be arriving at Hesley for 6pm
We will then be staying all day Sunday
We will then be leaving on the Monday

I booked the site in accordance with the above on Monday this week (27th April). And like you mentioned we will have to walk to Asda for food. O and How long will it be before Chris W gets back from Cambridge? The equipment we will be requiring is as follows:

  • Stove(s)/Gas
  • Some form of mess tent, Gazebo like at District Camp last year perhaps?
  • Somewhere to store food
  • Portable table with chairs to eat food from

That's all i can think of really, so apart from that all's good :)

Explorer Update

Many thanks to all who turned out for the St George’s day parade & service.

A reminder NO Explorer’ on Monday night 27.04.09, as both Chris’ are not available.

We have the Constitution signed up, Jim is preparing the Young Persons Protection Form & ChrisW is on with the end of year finance reports which will be sent in for the Equipment funding bid, next week. The Chris’ will be sorting out some equipment for the district camp also next week.

Unfortunately the District Executive have declined to help finance any tents for us before we raise some money ourselves as ‘we do not look after equipment’. Can anyone remember damaging tents when they were loaned to us?

Four Explorers have been invited to do a 15-minute presentation @ 7pm on Weds 13.05.09 on why our trip to the WW1 battlefields will benefit you and the wider community. No presentation = No trip!

District Camp 12th June – are we doing an assault course and evening time running an ‘American diner’? Who’s going?

July 2011 the North are hosting an event similar to the O2 arena 2007 event – anyone interested or suggestions?

Your camp to Hesley 02 to 04 May is on! I’ve got the paperwork so will let the DC etc know. Ben WOODCOCK will be in charge. As the event is so close you’ll have to use your own tents and I suggest buy the food from Asda Chapeltown – The happy campers are; BenW, Ian Mac, NathanL, ChrisW, Tamsin, BenM, DaleM, Lauren, NathanT, AdamB, IanU, AshM & AndyS – does anyone need to borrow any equipment?

5th September is the Rimmington Challenge. Bigger and harder than last year
