No Explorers tomorrow (Mon 05/09/11), as you've all probably a hundred jobs to see to with the start-up of school.
First Explorers of the new season will be Monday 12/09/11 18:30hrs at Hoyland Common Scout Hut, Tinker Ln.

If you can have a think about what you'd like to do on Monday nights/Activities & come up with some fresh ideas please?
Outdoors - Do Something Outdoors
Could be a nature walk in the local park or a walk in Snowdonia.
Skills - Try a new Skill
Photography, Climbing, Computers, Water sports, Chess, anything really.
Physical Recreation - Some Physical Activity
Scuba Diving, Football etc
Community Service - Helping with the Community
Could be Helping at Cub Scouts or Help on a conservation project
Environment - Looking at Environmental issues
this could be taking part in a Plant a tree campaign
International - Developing an Understanding of other countries.
You could try cooking a Mexican meal for the Unit
Values - Looking at the ways you live your Life
could be finding out how far you can go in self defense.
Relationships - Learning to live and work with other people
Finding out the hazards in your meeting place for a visually impaired person

We have the Freezer Camp coming up in January. Unfortunately each unit only has 8 places available, so it's a first come first served - cost will be about £45pp - more detail & booking forms will be handed out.
Finally we need everyone to sign up for direct debit as we are wasting too much time taking subs and not doing. We will hand out a direct debit mandate for anyone needing one, allowing the finances to look after themselves and us to get on with doing stuff rather than finding who's not paid.

District Camp Important Info

Hi Guys & Gals,

You can arrive from 5pm on Friday if not already there, please ask your parents to be aware of a different traffic system which will be in force and to please follow the stewards instructions. There will be a one way system in place throughout the weekend. If your parents have booked to stay over the weekend it is suggested that they camp in the over 18s section.

There will be an opening and closing ceromony at which you must wear full uniform and necker. (if you dont have one you can collect one before the ceromony) also Fitzwilliam explorers must wear our necker at all times during the weekend please.

If you have not paid your camp fees then you need to do so by Thursdays meeting please.

We have been asked to help out at a summer fayre from the 17th to 19th Jun 2011, with things like marshaling, help put tents up etc. In return for your time the camping will be free and you will be provided with free lunch on the Saturday and free BBQ on the Saturday night. A charge of £5 will be levied for the rest of the meals for the weekend.

First Mountain Bike Challenge

Today's event organised by our illustrious leader (aka Chris "the fed" Moore) went really well, everyone who participated reported much enjoyment and were looking forward to next year. I think however we had enough chocolate bars to Jack Moore happy for the rest of his adolescence and enough fruit for us to supply Morrison's for a month. Chris did a fantastic job of organising and executing the event, ensuring all competitors got to the end safely. Thanks to all who took part and a special thanks to Shaun and his lads, Ruth & Ross, Mr & Mrs Moore senior and Master Jack Moore. I am sure the event will be repeated next year (with a few tweaks). Congratulation Chris on a job well done.

Hi Chaps & Chapess,

There is no explorers on Monday 4/10/10 as the roof of the hut is being repaired/replaced and I am on my jollies, also the week after 11/10/10 I have, as requested, booked a floodlit 5 a side fooball pitch at Kendray Playing Fields, Kendray, S70 3JR, so you need to be at the hut for normal time as the pitch is booked 7 to 8pm. The cost each is between £7 and £11.50* including transport there and back from Hoyland Common.

Africa Expedition 2012

Applications are invited from Scouts, Explorers, Network members and Leaders to take part in The 2012 UK-Africa Expedition to Botswana.
The Expedition will work on two projects linked to the conservation of wildlife.
Starting in northern Botswana, on the edge of the Okavango Delta, and working closely with the local Scouts, we aim to create a campsite and training centre. This will enable Botswana Scouts to educate Scouts and other visitors in the importance of conserving wildlife while also preserving a natural area and allowing space for local species to thrive.
After three weeks the team will transfer to the Mokolodi Game Reserve, just outside Gaborone, where the main focus will be on constructing a manager's bungalow and possibly erecting an observation tower. Camping on the reserve, everyone will have the opportunity to accompany the Park Rangers as they perform their daily duties.
Each team will be in Botswana for about five weeks during July and August 2012. There will be at least two departure dates that will reflect the different school terms across the UK.
While in Botswana UK Scouts will work alongside Botswana Scouts, be under canvas for the whole trip and will share meals and social time with our Botswana hosts. The emphasis will be on the projects although some free time will allow more of the country to be visited and give a break from the hard work. Food selection can also be limited in Africa so fussy eating habits will have to be dealt with before departure.
Applicants should be aged between 16 and 20 at the beginning of the expedition. Those over 20 will be considered for leader roles, although these are limited.
Over the next twenty four months training courses designed to prepare everyone for their time in Africa, will be run throughout the country.
These will cover all aspects of living in close proximity to fellow Scouts and the wildlife which may be encountered. Safety and good health are always a priority.
The cost will be around £3000. This covers travel to and from Botswana, subsistence and the materials for the projects. Everyone will be targeted with raising this amount by individual fund raising and grants application.
This will be discussed at our various training weekends, however fundraising activities will be each individual's responsibility.

The countdown to this year's Apex Extreme is on! Entries are now open for this year's event and it's expected it will fill up in record time!

We're delighted to confirm that this year we've made space for more teams than ever before to take part. 80 teams of Explorer Scouts and members of the Scout Network will be able to compete in the event which will take place in the Peak District on the weekend of 8th - 10th October 2010.

Even with space for those extra teams we know that the demand for our competitions has grown to such a level that they now generally reach capacity more than a month before the event is due to take place. So many teams are now hoping to take part in what is one of the country's biggest
and most exciting competitions that it's turning into a race to even make it onto the confirmed team list!

You may recall that we planned to run Module G at the last meeting and Module H on the meeting on 8 July, together with a BBQ. As we did not have anyone from Pennine turn up at the meeting (thanks to those Explorers that did make the effort from outside the District so we were able to have a meeting), we have decided to make this Thursday's meeting into a planning session where we can discuss with each of you where you are on the scheme, what modules / challenges you have completed and where we need to concentrate our efforts. As such the meeting will no longer be Module H nor the BBQ

11:30am Cycle via Sustrans route into Sherwood Pines & follow Kitcheners Trail (Red Route) to Forest Park Visitor Centre.
13:30pm meet Big Jim @ Sherwood Pines Car Park for BBQ in the wood & game of rounders etc.
15:00pm cycle back to Vicar Water Car Park via Red Route & Sustrans Trail (total about 10miles)
5pm (ish) arrive back at Hoyland Common
Note: I have not received any parental permission forms yet, you will need Cycle Protective Equipment as this is proper off road cycling, Helmet, Gloves, Glasses etc - you may need to carry a drink or have chocolate type snacks whilst cycling.
Please bring what food you want to BBQ, we'll provide the means of cooking it, this can be left in Jim' car for you to meet at half time rather than carrying on the bike.
There is available at cost 'go ape' @ the visitors centre, there is also a free bike park for the extreme cycle experience - however I would need written parental consent stating you go on these obstacles at your own risk and absolve scouting of any responsibility.

Breakfast Sunday get some bacon & sausages as jim may be late. It is costing £3 for the day, we're running a bouncy castle, selling burnt bacon butties and helping cubs & scouts with their activities.
Sunday you must be on site by 10am when the gates close till 5pm when we cycle back to drop off the equipment.

Thanks to Shaun, Ash, Baggy, George, Tom, Stoner, Lodgy, Dale & Harry for the bike ride last night - it was 14.8km.
I understand ice skating is off next week as we've not received any activity consent forms and so cannot book it!
Tesco bag packing 5th June - please let a Leader know, who can & who cannot go by 25/05/10! We have a list of do's & don't that we have to comply with.
Chief Scouts visit 30/05/10 - need permission forms from those wanting to camp by 25/05/10 along with a £5 deposit, we need to liaise with the district leaders to firm up the plans.
Tarnoree 19/06/10 is cancelled. However we will still be running a camp for Hoyland & Hoyland Common (who have booked), again we need to liaise with the leaders to plan the activities etc. We need permission forms from those wanting to camp by 25/05/10 along with a £5 deposit.
Think that's it but I'm sure you'll let me know.

Young Leader Unit Update

Our next Young Leader training session will be held on Thursday, 13th May at 8pm at Penistone HQ. The Module we will be covering is Module G; – Programme Planning. Even if you have already done this unit (we have run it once before) it will be beneficial for you to attend so we can share with you the new information available from HQ. The module was planned when we met up earlier in the year to discuss the needs for training up to summer. How are the annual challenges going, it would be great to present some of the bars to go onto your YL badges.
Chief Scout – Bear Grylls Visit
The County team are organising an activity day at Hesley Wood which Bear Grylls will be attending and each District have been allocated a strict number of places for Leaders and Young People. We have two places for YLs to attend, so if you want the opportunity of attending then please let me know; all names will go into a hat and two will be drawn at random. The event will run from 10am to 5pm on 30th May (yes it clashes with Troop Camp) you will need to be on site throughout that time and no vehicles will be allowed on / off site after the event has started until it ends.
It will cost £3 per person, which pays for hotdog, commemorative badge and drinks throughout the day. You will need a packed lunch and a drink. Dress code is scouting activity clothing with neckers - not uniform. This will be a fun day for all sections and you may get the opportunity of seeing the Chief Scout as he travels around the site.
Responses to me by 7 May please if you wish to be in the draw for the activity day.

Cub Taster Weekend
As stated before the idea of the Cub Taster Weekend is to put on as many scouting skills, games and activities for the cubs so that they can get an idea of what scouts is about so that they can be a little more prepared for moving on. If we aim to put these bases etc. on for Saturday then if we don't get enough for the whole weekend we can do something else with them on the Sunday. Sylvia and I would be most grateful if you can ask your leaders, particularly those in the Scout and Active Support sections if they can help.
I have attached a booking form so that leaders can either stay and help all weekend or just for the day if they wish. Once the Howard Walker has been filled it will be their own camping accommodation just behind the H.Walker building.I have also attached the weekend booking form for your info.

A few hints/Tips/Advice & the inevitable disclaimer:
* Clothing - windproof/waterproof & tight fitting - do not wear or tie anything around you that will become trapped.
* Footwear - trainers comfortable for safe cycling
* First Aid - should you fall off
* Repairs - do you know how to fix a puncture or a chain having come off
* Lights - do they work, have you spare batteries
* Food & Water
* Mobile Phone/telephone money

Parents/Guardians should note in addition to the activity consent:
* Cycling can be dangerous & a physically challenging activity - participants should be aware of risks and be personally responsible for loss, damage or injury
* Helmets must be worn
* Damage costs (other than punctures) will be the responsibility of the rider
* Cycle/Countryside/Highway Codes must be adhered to & respect given to others.
* Although cycles and equipment may be provided, it is down to individuals to check this and ensure it is safe and suitable for the activity they are about to commence.
* Cycles may be ridden anywhere that complies with the law i.e. on public roads, bridleways & trails.

Barnsley Explore

Due to the poor response to the Barnsley Explore activity on the 20th March, I was late getting the details out, we are going to postpone the event to later in the year and possibly run it on a Friday Night in June / July or September.The format of the new event will be an incident night hike of about 3.5 miles with 5 / 6 bases, starting and finishing at Silverwood but this time teams who have finished will pitch their own tent and sleep in until morning where over breakfast trophies will be awarded to the winning Scout and Explorer teams. The date will follow once have had chance to check my diary and compare with your District diaries. Sorry again and please apologise to any young people who were interested

Haiti
Since last month many Scouts over the UK have raised an enormous amount of money for our partnership organisations such as Shelterbox and SOS Children's villages, and also for the Scout appeal run by WOSM. You can read more about how Scouts funds have been used on the WOSM website - scout.org/solidarite-haiti .
Thank you for all the hard work you have done to get Scouts locally engaged with this, it's made an enormous difference to Haitians.

External Organisations
Currently we're working with Shelterbox – and we've been keeping you up to date with new events as and when they happen. The next big event is the Shelterbox scavenger hunt on 12th June. It's still possible to sign up to the ShelterBox Challenge, 10 months of Programme ideas and resources based around disaster relief. For more information, visit www.youngshelterbox.org.
We're also developing partnerships with other Organisations, and are now looking into how we can work together to support global Scouting in the UK. 13th World Scout Moot
The final Contingent gathering for all Mootsters is taking place from the 26th-28th March. All members of the Contingent are invited to a weekend of fun and preparation before their departure to Kenya in July.
We are also looking into developing opportunities for Scouts from overseas who will be supported by The UK Scout Association to attend the event. Further details about this are expected soon...

22nd World Scout Jamboree
The 7 IST selection days have taken place at locations across the UK and candidates were of a very high standard. During the week commencing Monday 1st March, we will be informing candidates of the outcome of their application by email. They will be asked to pay a £100 deposit within two weeks of receiving an offer.
Other areas of the project are progressing, including discussion with a number of other National Scout Organisations regarding possibilities for Home Hospitality and Solidarity projects. As with the Moot, this is still to be confirmed and we hope to have more details in the coming months.
All members of the Jamboree contingent will be eligible to apply for a bursary, details of which will be available from Jamboree Unit Leaders. The finer details of the bursaries will be available once a Unit has made its first payment, due by the end of February. The submission of bursary applications will be coordinated by Unit Leaders, so please approach them directly if you have any questions.

Volunteering in Sweden
Kate Wilson has been appointed as the successful applicant for the May 2010 intake of the EVS programme in Sweden. Kate will travel to Stockholm to volunteer for four months in the offices of the Swedish Jamboree organisers. We wish her the best of luck with this opportunity.
Meanwhile, Daniel Miles from Dorset is nearing the end of his placement. He has already made a valuable contribution to the event, focussing in particular on the Jamboree programme.
There will be another intake in November 2010. The application process for this will open in the next few months, information of which can be found at www.scouts.org.uk/IVOSS.

Visits Abroad Day
On Sunday 21st February, we hosted a meeting at Gilwell Park to review the Visits Abroad process. Many County level volunteers have had the opportunity to have their say at the various DAS Days around the country so this was the turn of section leaders. Some great information was shared and the Visits Abroad update project is now full steam ahead! Keep an eye on future monthly updates to check out how things are going.

The Explorer team at HQ are looking to produce two new resources to support the Explorer Belt Award, similar to those for the Queen's Scout Award. The international department has been asked to help out – so we would appreciate any comments you may have on the Explorer Belt – what support would be welcomed, what's gone well and why; what could have gone better…

Joint UK-Sweden opportunity for Scout Network members August 2010
A group of Swedish Sea Scouts aged 18/19 have made contact with a proposal for an exciting joint project this summer. This fantastic opportunity for approximately 10 Network members would involve spending a week in the Mediterranean, taking part in activities and sharing cultural experiences with a similar sized group from Sweden.
Much of the week would be spent aboard a sailing vessel; visiting different Greek ports in the Athens area and using the opportunity both to meet with local Scouts and to promote the work of the Scout Movement to other locals. No prior sailing experience is necessary - just a bunch of enthusiasm and a willingness to learn! Offshore sailing is a unique and exciting adventurous team-activity; whilst the Mediterranean is an excellent location for beginners and experienced sailors alike.
Expressions of interest are now being sought from members. Please let Network Members who may be interested in applying know about eth trip; and ask them to contact Dan Weaver as soon as possible for further information via danny.weaver@btinternet.com.

JEKA 50th Anniversary
As part of their 50th Anniversary celebrations, JEKA offered free places at their summer centres to people from 20 Groups. Nigel pulled the names of the lucky winners from a hat, and they will be contacted soon. JEKA also handed over a cheque for £3, 300 for the International Fund to support Scouts travelling overseas – so a big thank you to them for their ongoing support, and happy anniversary!

European and World Conferences
We are pleased to announce that the following people have been selected to attend the Scout Assoc at the Euro Scout Conference in Brussels this July:

And a fourth representative will be nominated by the Board. The conference sets the agenda for Scouting in Europe and is a valuable opportunity to promote the voice of young people in European Scouting.
You should also note that the World Scout Conference and Forum will take place next Jan in Brasil. Information about selecting young people to attend this event can be expected later in the year. Watch this space…

In his new role as ADC Activities he will be looking after DofE, and as Nights Away Advisor, he is keen to get all the Explorer Leaders a Camping Permit which includes Light Weight Camping.
The course will look at the items specific to lightweight expedition camping, which are additional to the items required for the Campsite Nights Away Permit.
Bronze and Silver DofE Expeditions are in Terrain Zero. As Unit leaders you should be able to supervise the expeditions, but you will require a light weight camping permit. You will also have to have an adequate level of walking, navigation & supervisory skills in the Terrain Zero areas, to enable your DC to give you authorisation to supervise the expeditions.
This course will be the 1st stage, which will then require you to organise and run a lightweight camp for your permit assessment.
This course is not intended to replace the module 16 course, but is in addition to.
If you have an existing Nights Away Permit (Campsite) then you will only require the additional items to be assessed.
Andy is therefore looking at a weekend after Easter at the start of the D of E expedition window.
Looking at the Pennine District Diary the best weekend is 17 – 18th April.
The proposed start time in Penistone would be 8-00am Saturday, travel by car to campsite, carry all equipment on walk and pitch camp late afternoon.
Saturday evening meal at Pub in Malham, Sunday morning camping skills and cooking, return after lunch.

Also the Intro to the DofE course on 13th March would be very useful to any Explorer Scout Leader or Scout Leader wanting to run the awards.
There are two more dates for DofE training here in South Yorkshire.
They are the 13th and 14th March.
The 13th will be intro to the DofE and the 14th EAAS.
I recommend the “intro to the DofE course” to all Explorer Leaders, it’s the one which Brian & I went to last year at Trippet Lane.
There will be a cost of £15 per person for the DofE course; which will cover the cost of course materials, refreshments and lunch. Please find the attached application form. Applications for courses will close 4 week before the course.

Towards the backend of the year we should be starting to deliver the DofE Expedition Supervisor course, ready for the 2011 expedition season.
A Light Weight Camping Permit and the Supervisor course will be ideal for all unit leaders. The DofE and Scout Association made the decision that they had to get the assessors in place first.
The Supervisor course will be launched shortly to the national group of Assessor Trainers.

Due to a change in circumstances, we need extra help every meeting night to comply with the minimum leader to young person supervision ratios.
In short we need a parent/friend/relative etc, who is over 18yrs, to stay on Monday nights for the 2hr meetings to go ahead. We are not asking for the volunteer to wear a uniform or undergo any training (unless they wish to do so) but CRB checks will have to be completed to comply with the legislation that requires this supervision ratio.
As with all Scouting this is a voluntary position, the only payment being to see young people enjoying themselves.

FELLTOP CONDITIONS REPORT from Helvellyn at 120pm on Tuesday 9th February 2010.There was a light dusting of snow at all levels, but it has only settled above 500m with the main snow level being above 650m. Below 650m only patches of old, icy snow remain and these are generally, but not always, avoidable. Above 650m, snow depth increases with height to reach over 70cm in drifts although as the main snowpack is icy you should not sink down into it, apart from the recent snow that has only added up to 5cm in drifts. Well-used footpaths are covered in compacted snow and ice making the going - with crampons - easy, although treacherous without. Both Striding and Swirral Edges are in full winter condition. The exits have a light covering of unstable snow over a layer of consolidated snow and ice; so care needs to be taken. Cornices have formed along the summit ridges, so please keep well back from the edge and advise others to do likewise. Full winter clothing, footwear and equipment are essential for anyone venturing out onto the fells as are crampons and ice axes for anyone going above the snowline. Several Lakeland tarns, such as Red Tarn, have frozen the ice is not very thick, so please do not be tempted out on them! Climbing Conditions : Still good, although care needs to be taken with the intermittent top layer of spindrift; so if you are experienced, properly equipped, and can assess any changes to the snowpack and conditions, come and enjoy! We will be visiting Old Ings and Berkwith Caves just out side of Horton in
Ribblesdale. If your child would like to go caving this is the perfect
opportunity.

You will need to bring.

1. A packed lunch and a hot drink
2. A full change of WARM Cloths. (Everyone will get wet and it will be
cold)
3. Wellington Boot are preferable however sturdy boot can be warn (your
feet will get wet so remember a change of foot wear)

5. A bin Bag is useful for your wet and dirty cloths

Winter Walk

Just a reminder the walk is still taking place this Sunday, 9am meet @ Flouch Car park (last car park on the right before the Flouch roundabout on the A616), to try and get rid of the excesses of the festive season.
Due to the prevailing winter conditions (6 to 12" standing snow & sub zero temperatures) only Explorers wearing walking boots (not trainers or shoes) and with appropriate winter clothing, will be able to participate! Remember to bring parental consent forms and a plastic bag 1. to sit on @ lunch 2. to use as a sledge.
You will not require ice axes, crampons or rope, but remember if its wet or lost it's a long cold walk back to the car park so bring extra gloves/hat/jumper etc in your rucksack!
